Textured or “popcorn ceilings” installed in homes and businesses before the early 1980s may contain asbestos. Asbestos was used in ceilings for its strength and sound-proofing qualities. You can’t see asbestos in your textured ceiling. You need to have it tested to be sure. If you disturb the asbestos, you can breathe in dangerous fibers. Textured ceilings in newer homes should not contain asbestos.
If you have “popcorn ceilings” in your home or business, the safest way to know for sure is to hire a certified Asbestos Inspector to collect samples for analysis by an accredited laboratory. We will give you a report with recommendations and advice on what to do next. Contact us today to discuss your project.
Do the Asbestos regulations apply in your situation?
According to Louisiana Environmental Code 33:111 Chapter 51
An asbestos inspection is required when any of the following buildings are undergoing renovation, gutting, or demolition:
- Buildings with more than four dwelling units.
- Public, school (both private and public), commercial, or industrial buildings, regardless of their current or former use, including those being converted to such uses.
- Any building or structure within an installation where the project is under the control of a single owner or operator.
Failure to conduct an asbestos inspection in these scenarios results in all demolition debris being classified as asbestos-containing, necessitating disposal according to strict federal regulations for handling asbestos materials.
This ensures compliance and safety in managing potential health hazards associated with asbestos during construction or demolition activities.
